well i finally did it. the car i have wanted since i was a kid in high school is sitting in my garage and i keep walking out at night just to flip the light on and look at it. a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. im 52 and i have been telling my wife someday since i was 17, and someday finally showed up.
ill back up. the guy two doors down from me growing up had a 69 and he let me sit in it exactly once and that was that, i was ruined for life. owned a lot of sensible stuff since then, raised two kids, but the camaro itch never went anywhere. every time i priced them at the big classic dealers or watched one cross the block at the barrett jackson type auctions the numbers were just silly, 60 to 80 grand for a nice driver and a lot more if it had a story attached.
the one i bought off lucas-motors.com is a driver quality restomod and im glad it is, i did not want a trailer queen i would be scared to drive. hugger orange with a black stripe, a 350 small block with a mild cam, a 700R4 overdrive so it will actually cruise on the highway without screaming its head off, front disc conversion, power steering, and a newer aluminum radiator. somebody built it to drive it and then drove it. it came in a fair bit under what the classic dealers were asking for comparable cars and well under the auction money.
my first thought was ok what is wrong with it. so i did the homework. the listing had a pile of photos and a walkaround video with a cold start and a drive down the street. i got the build sheet and the folder of receipts the builder kept, read the cowl tag, and i paid a classic car appraiser who does this for insurance work to go look at it in person and write it up. he confirmed the floors and the trunk pan were solid, no filler hiding in the quarters, and the body gaps were honest. verified the title was clean and in hand before i ever placed a bid.
it is not perfect and i did not want perfect. the appraiser flagged a valve cover gasket seeping a little oil and a choke that was hanging up on cold starts. both were cheap and easy, a set of gaskets and an afternoon, and i freed up the choke myself with some cleaner and a new spring. twenty bucks and a saturday.
had it shipped enclosed from where the car actually sat, i was not about to put it on an open trailer and let the rock chips at it. showed up when they said it would, no surprises. anybody else here buying classics or restomods through lucas-motors.com? curious what else is moving through them because honestly this was smoother than the last used daily i bought off a dealer lot.
